It was funny to see Luis roll his eyes at his mother as he made it obvious that he didn’t agree. But the best part of the evening was that I understood at least 65 percent of the conversation. Luis and Luna speak very slowly and of course it helps that they understand English. I was also speaking the most Spanish I have at any dinner. It also helps that I am coming for dinner. Before Luis came the meals were very undesirable and I chose to spend my evenings studying at the Bird Land Jazz café. I was also not used to being a guest in someone else’s house for such a long period of time. This often made me feel uncomfortable.
Another reason I liked to study at the Birdland Jazz café was because it was very difficult for me to come home for lunch, go to my tutoring session, study and then have to come back for dinner. Instead, I would go to the café, which was close to San Boal and study for the rest the night. The café itself is also an amazing place. Its location is very discreetly located at the intersection of Gran Villa and Avenedida de Mirat and it overlooks the very beautiful Plaza de Espana. It is takes up two stories and sits on top of a hair salon. It doesn’t serve any food, but it full of coffee, alcohol and many different types of smoke. However, if you need some fresh air, it has several balconies on each level to give you access to air and an incredible view. Although I will miss this café, I am going to start coming home after school instead. That’s because, as I reaffirmed today, that’s where the real learning experience is.
