My housemate, Janice and I are Asians and we used to have a fairer skin then what we have now. When the both of us walk together I find that some people do stare at us. It is fine with us as we both know that in here people stare at people (especially people in the park). This one time when both of us are walking we were stopped by an old gentleman with a walking stick. He stopped Janice by grabbing one of her arm and asked few questions which later she told me where were we from and what we were doing in Spain, how long we were planning to stay here. Later on he kissed her in the cheeks. I had thought that we were able to leave but he still has her in his grip and he called out to me Señorita, venga! I shouldn’t have come but I was raised that I needed to respect my elders always. For an old man his grip is strong (and it hurt a little) and kissed both of my cheeks hard. I did not like one bit but he seem to be happy because he let the both of us go saying Nos vemos las guapas!

Janice told me that it often happened to her whenever she is at the Plaza Mayor drawing. Men both old and young always came up to her and talk to her. When they finished talking they kissed both of her cheeks. I am not accustomed to strangers kissing my cheeks. I brought up the topic of kissing cheeks over dinner with our host family and they explain that even person that you only have met for a few minutes is considered strangers and a handshake is sufficient, a kiss however are not necessary. They went on that families, friends, acquaintances that you know and familiar with then you are able to kiss both cheeks. But this only refers to a woman to a woman and a man to a woman. A man to a man the customs are only handshakes.
