Diario 1

Our first day in Spain was dramatic. Once we arrived in Madrid exhausted and excited, we found out that Muriel, Hussein, and Chris had not gotten their luggage, which was harsh for their first day in Salamanca; therefore, we had to help them out with some extra clothes and t-shorts. After couple hours in the airport, we took the bus, which was reserved for us by the University of Salamanca. Once we got into the bus, we all went for a nap–we were dead tired. In our way to Salamanca, which was almost three hours, some of us were taking photos and looking through the window at how the capital of Spain is. Although Madrid was beautiful as advertised, we observed a phenomenal graffiti all over the wall of Madrid at least in our way to Salamanca. The graffiti didn’t stop at Madrid it was all over Salamanca too. I found that strange because at least in the United States the graffiti is widespread only in certain neighborhood but in Spain is the contrary graffiti is everywhere from the airport in Madrid through the highway till it reach la Universidad de Salamanca . And I asked my host-family about it and they told me that nowadays graffiti is used by the youth everywhere in Spain.
My host-family was pretty good. As soon as I met my host-mother, Maria, I get along with her quickly. When I asked her if she had the Internet at home, she called her daughter and gave me her cellular-phone to talk with her. Lucia, her daughter, told me that I have to get a card to use the internet because in Spain the internet works with card. and told me that her brother Alberto had the internet card and I can borrow it from him –sadly when I met him he showed me that card and told me that was broken. Albert has 17 years old. He is good friend of mine now. He rides his motorcycle all day. He asked me if I want to ride on his motorcycle but I apologized because I don’t know how to ride motorcycles in addition to the fact that I remember Mr. Passarilli s words concerning not driving. I found that in Salamanca riding motorcycles is very famous amongst the youth. In addition to motorcycles, basketball, and soccer are the talk of the town. Alberto told me that they had pretty good team of basketball; whereas, they had a weak soccer team. Their team is on the second league.
La plaza mayor is my favorite. It is the place where all students meet throughout the world. The atmosphere is so great. Students hang out till midnight. La Plaza Mayor is filled and encircled with cafés and restaurants. Students usually sit on the plaza for many hours talking and chatting. What makes the plaza more interesting for international students is that it has a bank and an internet cyber in which students can chat wit their families and even call them. There is another widespread phenomenon that I observed in the Plaza which is getting ice-cream all day long may be because the ice-cream is so great in Salamanca.
Although La Plaza Mayor is now filled with boys and girls or men and women side by side –setting together chatting with each other, but it wasn’t like this in the past years. According to my teacher who was born in Salamanca and knows the history of Salamanca, he told us in class that La Plaza Mayor during the catholic rule used to be different and used to be run by the orders of the church. For example, during that time it was forbidden for girls to intermingle or sit with boys and vice-a-versa. Therefore, the men were ordered to walk on the north-side of the plaza and the women on the other side of the plaza in a circle so that there would be no dating.

In my Cultura Espanola class, I have learnt a lot about Spanish culture, heritage and history. And I was fascinated about the Spanish transition to democracy or what is called
New Bourbon restoration. It was the era when spain moved from the dictatorship of Franco to a libral democratic state
. the transition is usually said to have begun with fanco's death on november 20,1975,while its completion has been variously said to be marked by the spanish constitution of 1978,the failure of Antonio Tejero's attampted coup on feburary 23,1981,or the electoral victory of the socialist psoe on october 28,1982. the death of Franco elevated Don Juan Carlos de Borbon to the monarchy.until Franco's death,Juan Carlos had disecretly stood in the background and seemed to follow the dictator 's plan . However ,once in power as King of Spain, Juan Carlos facilitated the development of the curent political system , as his father ,Don Juan de Barbon , had advocated since 1946. The transition was an ambitious plan that counted on ample support both within and outside of Spain.
