I was soooooo lost!!!!

Today was so hard. We had our placement exam. I woke up on time and I live very close to the University so i thought it would be easy. One problem: I cannot read a map. I realized that Im so accustomed to Chicago that I was at a complete loss when it came to finding my way. I was lost for 40 minutes!!! I was trying to find my way and i was too nervous to ask a stranger where to go since I probobaly wouldnt understand them anyway. I think about all the millions of immigrants and refugees who have to either uproot their whole family and transition or those who must go ahead alone to pave the way for their families. I truly appreciate now how lucky I am to be in the united States while so many other people are dying to reach places like the US or Spain in search of opportunity or in some cases merely survival. I think of all the things they must endure in order to start a new life.
I have to admit tonight I went out in the evening and I ran into a shady character on my way home. At first everything was ok, but then the situation slowly digressed. I was tired and disoriented and I was unsure of how I was going to get home when I ran into several students from our group. I was sooooo relieved!!!! They were so wonderful and helped me out and made sure i got home ok. I realized how valuable our Chicago sessions were in developing a cohesive group. Had i just met them 24 hours before i dont know if i would have had the same outcome. i also realize I was naive to think that because we are not in a big city that everyone is friendly.
